It’s Official: Ethan & Olivia Plath Finalize Divorce After Legal Snag
For dedicated fans of “Welcome to Plathville,” a significant chapter has closed. Ethan and Olivia Plath have officially finalized their divorce, marking the end of their five-year journey together.
According to court documents obtained by Starcasm, the divorce was approved just a week after Ethan refiled the paperwork on February 16 in Minnesota. The documents reveal that the couple had already separated in February 2023, months before their public announcement on Instagram. Adding an interesting twist, Olivia’s sister, Sophia, reportedly leaked news of the impending divorce on Instagram before Ethan and Olivia were ready to share it with the world.
Starcasm also reported that Ethan and Olivia completed the initial dissolution forms in December 2023, but Olivia submitted them in February 2024. “Plathville” viewers may recall Olivia mentioning that the initial court filing hit a snag because Ethan hadn’t filled out the paperwork correctly. This “oopsie” played out on an episode of the show, prompting Olivia to elaborate further on social media.
“What is not shown [on the episode] is he filled them out incorrectly and refused to put financial information which is needed in the state of Minnesota. So the court flagged the papers and [the divorce] never went through,” Olivia explained. “It wasn’t actually filed and we didn’t get divorced. And when I reached out to him to try to get him to fix the paperwork, he blocked me. And I remained blocked for like a year.”

Ethan’s recent refiling of the divorce documents led to a swift resolution. On February 23, a judge approved the dissolution without requiring a hearing. The divorce decree was officially finalized on the three-year anniversary of their original separation date.
The official reason cited for the divorce was “an irretrievable breakdown of the marriage relationship between the parties,” according to Starcasm.
This quick resolution was likely due to the couple’s proactive approach in avoiding potential disputes. With no children involved, they qualified for a joint dissolution, eliminating the need for a hearing.
The documents specify that both Ethan and Olivia will retain their personal assets, debts, and bank accounts. Ethan will keep two Chrysler New Yorkers, a Plymouth, and a Roth IRA. Olivia will retain a Subaru Outback, a SoFi investment account, and her freelance photography business, Sunshine Media, Inc.
Notably, “neither party is seeking a name change.” Olivia has previously discussed her decision to keep the Plath name on social media.
“I’m not going to spend my life changing my name depending on what man has current ‘ownership’ of me. I strongly disagree with the sentiment that men ‘own’ last names,” she stated.
In recent times, Olivia has been increasingly candid about alleged abuse she suffered from Ethan. She has also openly discussed her challenges with the ‘Plathville’ production company and the difficulties she faced in getting out of her TLC show contract.
The reason behind Ethan’s sudden push to finalize the divorce remains unclear. However, Olivia suggested last year that it might be linked to Ethan’s rumored engagement to Teegan Nichols (though rumors suggest they may have since split).
“At first my ex wouldn’t sign divorce papers because he kept thinking I was going to come back… [Then,] he was like, ‘Olivia, I’m sorry I made you wait but we need to get divorced immediately. Please collaborate on this, this needs to happen as soon as possible. I have an attorney, he’ll call you. Get this done please,’” she said.
“He sends me a text like, ‘Me and my attorney are fed up with you. We have to get this done. Please stop stalling. Cooperate with me or it’s going to be worse for both of us in the long run,’” she explained. “Then I find out: he got engaged. Imagine proposing to a girl and being like, ‘Will you become my wife?’ and she says yes and having to be like, ‘Oh, I have to legally divorce my other wife first.’”
As of now, neither Ethan nor Olivia have publicly commented on the finalized divorce.
