Olivia Plath Is The Real Villain On Welcome To Plathville Not Ethan
Welcome To Plathville’s Olivia Plath has been trying to rebrand throughout the current season to make herself look different than the rest of her former family, but she’s the real villain of the series, not her ex-husband Ethan Plath. Olivia’s journey on Welcome To Plathville season 6 has shown a new side of the wedding photographer, who has been sharing herself more vulnerably as she’s moved through her divorce. Olivia married Ethan at just 20 years old and has been trying to keep her relationship afloat for years, but when things took a turn, she had to jump ship.
Throughout her time on Welcome To Plathville, Olivia has had many relationships crash and burn. While she was on good terms with the Plath family early in her marriage, Olivia’s luck with her in-laws quickly ran out after she started changing her ways. Growing into herself, Olivia’s attitude and beliefs shifted after her marriage to Ethan began, and the things she wanted in life didn’t seem to align with anything the Plath family was looking for. While she had every right to change, Olivia’s behavior threatened the Plath family, and she became the villain of Welcome To Plathville rather than Ethan.
Olivia’s Relationship With Ethan Went Downhill
She Chose Herself Over Her Marriage
During the early days of Olivia’s relationship with Ethan, it was clear that she was going into a situation where there were expectations were being put upon her. Though she was okay with the way that the Plath family functioned, she felt out of her depth about asking that things change when she and Ethan barely knew each other. As she got older and deeper into her marriage with Ethan, Olivia began to change in herself while Ethan largely remained the same. Ethan’s views and goals hadn’t shifted, but Olivia’s had, which pushed their relationship into a difficult place.
While Ethan wanted to work things out and bring Olivia back to how she’d been before, Olivia wasn’t interested in returning to how she’d been in the past. When Olivia tried to push Ethan forward, he simply dug his heels in further and let her know that he didn’t want anything to be different than it had been before. Their marriage quickly went downhill, with Olivia feeling like she wasn’t an equal partner while Ethan felt like he wasn’t being heard.
Olivia Never Got Along With Kim Plath
She Didn’t Want A Relationship With Her Mother-In-Law
Although Olivia’s marriage to Ethan was between her and her then-husband, the Plath family tried to be very involved in their relationship, especially Ethan’s mother. Kim Plath, who pushed Ethan and Olivia to marry when they were young, wanted a specific relationship with her son and daughter-in-law, but Olivia wasn’t interested in fostering. When Olivia tried to show Ethan what she felt the truth was about Kim, Ethan was hesitant but believed his wife over his mother, which bothered Kim. When she was cut out of their lives, it became clear that Olivia and Kim weren’t on good terms.

Although Olivia has been able to get herself out from under the thumb of the Plath family and has chosen to live her life independently of their controlling nature, she still carries some of the blame surrounding the implosion of her relationship with Ethan. In the eyes of the Plath family, Olivia caused chaos and disarray to their family unit, breaking Ethan’s heart and for a time, keeping him away from the family itself. While the Welcome To Plathville star has been doing what’s best for her, Olivia’s behavior has been perceived as villainous to some, and noble to others.
Welcome To Plathville airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. EDT on TLC.
