The star of Sister Wives, Kody Brown, is known for many things. However, one thing he typically avoids is trouble with the law. In fact, fans may remember his hasty departure from Utah in the dead of night, driven by the fear of arrest for practicing polygamy. But what exactly happened to put Kody on the wrong side of the law?

Was Kody Brown Ever Arrested?

Despite rumors circulating on social media, Kody Brown has never actually been arrested.

In December, E! News reported that Kody had a run-in with the police, where he was almost incarcerated. A clip has been circulating in which Robyn Brown opens up about her husband’s run-in. Back in 2010, the entire Brown family lived in fear of Kody facing jail time simply for practicing their religion. As Robyn, his fourth and “favorite” wife, explained, “The state of Utah was threatening prosecution because of our beliefs, because we were a plural family.” She added, “We basically moved because we were trying to be family without being torn apart or thrown in jail.” The threat felt very real at the time.

However, Fox13 reported in 2016 that the Lehi Police Department had never opened an investigation into Kody. The entire family struggled with being open about polygamy. Robyn recalled that her friend would “look at me like I’m wrong or I’m a sinner because I was a part of a plural family.” Utah’s Federal Solicitor Parker Douglas noted, “The practice of the Utah Attorney General’s office is not to prosecute polygamists living in Utah under Utah’s criminal bigamy statute merely because of their polygamist practice.” It seems Kody was never in any real danger. And Sister Wives fans know that Kody would not have done well behind bars.
