“I really want clarity from Statler about whether or not she wants children,” Dempsey, 28, said in a confessional. “Because if we want different things, our entire relationship might just be a waste of time.”

The footage then shows Dempsey and Statler, 33, having dinner as the former asks her partner about possibly getting married and starting a family.

“Why do you want children? Why?” Statler responds before her friend breaks down in tears, declaring that “children make the world a better place.”

For her part, Statler is undecided about the prospect of having children. “They seem like a lot of work and a lot of money,” she said, noting that because she was adopted herself, she’s wary of imposing those problems on a baby in a similar situation. “I don’t know if I have the emotional and mental willpower. I don’t feel like I have that motherly bone in me.”

While Dempsey was hopeful about adoption, Statler explained that she was still dealing with her own issues.

“I think a lot of people just go into it believing that everything will work out and the child will be grateful to you and that things will be easy,” Statler said in a confessional. “That is simply not the case. I was taken away practically as soon as I was born, so I’ve always felt that part of me was missing, and I still have a lot of adopted trauma that I haven’t dealt with.”

The clip ends on a tense note as Dempsey announces that she will one day “have a child,” whether alone or with a partner.
